Florida’s DeSantis orders flags flown at half-staff in honor of Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy Buffett may have been born in Mississippi and raised in Alabama, but it’s the State of Florida that’s paying tribute to him by flying state flags at half-staff, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Thursday issued an order that flags in Key West and Tallahassee be flown at half-staff in honor of the late singer-songwriter, who died in New York Sept. 1 from a rare form of skin cancer at the age of 76.

“Born in Mississippi and raised in Alabama, Buffett moved to Key West in his early years to build a legacy,” DeSantis wrote in his order. “An inductee of the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, Buffett captured the Florida lifestyle and entertained generations of Floridians with his relaxed ‘Floridays’ style that embodied the spirit of the Gulf Coast and Conch Republic.”

The order applies to flags at three locations: the Monroe County Courthouse in Key West; City Hall in Key West; and the State Capitol in Tallahassee. The order called for the flags to be lowered from 5 p.m. (eastern time) Thursday to 5 p.m. Friday “because it’s always five o’clock somewhere,” the governor’s proclamation reads.
